27th Mar 2018
A King’s Lynn GP left her consulting room to take on the challenge of a half marathon to raise hundreds of pounds for a research charity.Dr Antonia Moussakou enjoyed the atmosphere of the London Landmarks Half Marathon so much that she has already signed up for next year’s event.
Dr Moussakou has so far raised more than £700 for Tommy’s, a charity which funds research into miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth along with providing pregnancy information.
She battled against an ongoing knee injury to complete the 13 mile run in 3hrs 7min and 29 sec.
Dr Moussakou, who is a GP at St James’ Medical Practice in King’s Lynn, said: “I absolutely loved it. The atmosphere was really good and the crowd was very supportive and carried you through.
“I have been gobsmacked with the response from people and their support. It is so easy to sit at your desk and not realise the impact you have on people’s lives but things like this bring that to the fore.
“The support I have received from patients and colleagues has meant a great deal.”
Dr Moussakou was inspired to support Tommy’s after suffering bleeding while pregnant year and had to take early maternity leave. She gave birth to baby Eleni, now nine months, in May last year.
Dr Moussakou, who also has nine-year-old son Giovanni, used the online materials on Tommy’s website during her pregnancy.
She has juggled the busy life as a GP with family commitments and training to get ready for the half-marathon on Sunday.
The route started off in Pall Mall before taking in St Paul’s Cathedral, The Bank of England, The Tower of London before crossing the finish line in Downing Street.
Dr Moussakou said: “I really enjoyed the music they played in different areas of the course as it really did help to carry you through. Hearing the bells of St Paul’s Cathedral was also wonderful.
“I was determined to finish but I could feel my knee filling up and giving way so I did walk for a little bit. I’m happy with my time.”
