Pop-Up Minor Injury Unit returns this weekend to Hunstanton

22nd Aug 2018
Coastal residents and holidaymakers are being urged to use a Pop-Up Minor Injury Unit over the Bank Holiday Weekend to support frontline NHS services.

Advanced First Aiders from St John Ambulance will be running the Pop-Up Minor Injuries Unit on The Lower Green, Hunstanton, over the Bank Holiday following a successful first weekend.

Around 25 people were treated for cuts, bites, burns and other minor injuries at the unit over August 18 and 19 - preventing a number from attending the nearest busy Emergency Department.

The team is returning to The Lower Green with an ambulance and tent between 11am to 7pm on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, August 25, 26 and 27.

West Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group is working with St John Ambulance to provide this service for the benefit of patients and frontline NHS staff.

Director of Nursing and Quality Assurance Sarah Jane Ward, a former St John Ambulance volunteer and Emergency Department nurse, has praised the people who provided the Pop-Up Unit over the weekend.

She said: “This is the first time we have commissioned a Pop-Up Unit like this and we have been really pleased with the response from the public over this first weekend.

“We know that some of the patients treated by St John Ambulance would have otherwise travelled to the nearest Emergency Department or another NHS service, but thanks to the unit they were able to get quick treatment and then go onto enjoy the rest of their day.

“I would like to thank all of the First Aiders who gave up their weekends to man the Pop-Up Unit to support the community and did a fantastic job in treating patients.

“Bank Holidays are always a busy time for the NHS, particularly with minor injuries, so we would like to appeal to people to consider using the NHS 111 service, a pharmacist or the Pop-Up Unit. It has been placed close to the many popular holiday destinations around the coastal route so if you have suffered a minor injury, burn or cut then St John Ambulance will be able to help.”

The First Aiders, who will be set-up between the Hunstanton Pier Family Entertainment Centre and the Esplanade Gardens, are able to treat:
  • Minor burns, cuts, grazes and bruises

  • Minor burns

  • Effects of the heat such as dehydration and sunburn

  • Sprains and stings

  • Allergies, stings and bites.

The unit is not just open for residents and holidaymakers in Hunstanton but also for those in nearby Snettisham, Heacham, Holme, Thornham and Burnham Market areas.

Christopher Levis, District Manager for St John Ambulance in Norfolk, said: ‘We were pleased with the response to last weekend’s Pop-Up Unit in Hunstanton and also that we were able to help a number of people, meaning that they did not need to go to the local Emergency Department. Our team of volunteers is looking forward to working in the community again during the Bank Holiday weekend and to assisting anyone with a minor injury who comes to find us on Lower Green.”

In the run-up to the Bank Holiday weekend, patients are also asked to ensure they order any regular medicines they taken in advance and not to leave health problems until they get worse.

All patients are asked to consider calling the NHS 111 service, which is available 24/7, or visiting a pharmacist, who can offer treatment advice for minor injuries, illnesses and infections. Pharmacists can also dispense emergency contraception and prescription medication.
